Valga University of Distinction launches its 12th season

Today, 24 September, the University of Tartu University of Distinction started its twelfth season at the Valga Cultural Centre.

On the occasion of the opening day, Monika Rogenbaum, the Mayor of Valga Municipality, welcomed the students and wished everyone an enjoyable and inspiring academic year. „It is a pleasure to see that our municipality values lifelong learning and the thirst for knowledge at all ages. The University of Excellence is a great opportunity to keep the mind refreshed and to broaden horizons. Education knows no age boundaries - it is a path that leads us all to new knowledge and exciting discussions,” said the Mayor.

Writer Valdur Mikita spoke about the Estonians' traditional relationship with nature and the connection between nature and health. 150 dignitaries from Valga County participated. In addition, the dignitaries followed the lecture online in nine county libraries.

This year's lecture was held on the occasion of the Year of the Estonian Book in cooperation with Valga Central Library. The lecture was supported by the Valga County Expert Group of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.

The University of Excellence is a form of continuing education where academic lectures offer a range of knowledge, practical and eye-opening topics. The lectures are open to people aged 50+ who are interested in world developments: societal issues, scientific advances, cultural processes and who wish to exchange ideas together.

The Valga University of Distinction is part of a nationwide network that started in 2010 in Pärnu and Tartu.

Valga Municipality wishes all students a successful new academic year!
