Smoke saunas put on the web map

A nationwide census of smoke houses is being carried out under the auspices of the Vana-Võromaa Smoke Houses Co-operative. Reports of smoke saunas have been received from all over Estonia, with the largest number of reports from Old Estonia.

By the beginning of autumn, 560 saunas have been registered, with information on a few hundred more still to come. In cooperation with the Land and Space Agency, a list of sauna sauna inventories has been prepared for the autumn solstice. Smoke sauna map application

The map window shows the location of the saunas, many of which also have a photo and brief information about the history of the sauna. Not all the smoke saunas recorded in the census are shown on the map. Only those for which the owner has given permission are shown. The map currently shows the status of the census at the end of August, and will be updated monthly.

Thank you to everyone who has already shared their stories with researchers! For those of you who haven't yet had a chance to record your smoke sauna, take some time during the autumn to do so. The census link is on the website savvusann.ee, the questions are presented in a video tutorial. You can also report a sauna by calling or writing to the enumerators.

For 10 years, the Old Estonia smokehouse tradition has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List, and the census is hoping to provide more accurate information on the number and use of smokehouses in the area. The project is supported by the Estonian Folk Culture Centre and the Võrumaa Expert Group of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia.
